Our Mission
The 12 two-year public colleges that comprise the System of Connecticut Community Colleges share a mission to make educational excellence and the opportunity for lifelong learning affordable and accessible to all Connecticut citizens. The colleges seek to enrich the intellectual, cultural and social environments of the communities they serve. The colleges support the economic growth of the state and its citizens through programs that supply business and industry with a skilled, well-trained work force.
Meeting Student and State Needs
Courses of study may lead to associate degrees, certificates, or to the acquisition of career or personal skills. A core curriculum of general education courses is required in every degree program, making a Community College education a combination of the career training and the liberal arts essential in today's complex and changing society. General studies programs allow students the flexibility to work for a college degree and personal enrichment, to meet individual educational goals, or to meet requirements for transfer to specialized major fields at four-year colleges and universities.
Workforce Skills and Personal Interests
In addition to the traditional degree programs offered by the colleges, non-credit courses, seminars, workshops and cultural activities are also offered as part of the Community Colleges' extensive continuing education and community service offerings.
Continuing Education
The Community Colleges also offer customized training and education programs to meet the needs of Connecticut businesses and industries. As the workplace and workers change, continuing education is a means for both businesses and workers to maintain currency, keep pace with advancing technology, and compete in the global marketplace. Continuing education provides a competitive advantage for both employers and employees through improved skills and increased productivity.
Governance
The college system is governed by an 18-member Board of Trustees; 16 members are appointed by the Governor for six-year terms and two members are elected by the system students for alternating two-year terms. The Trustees meet monthly, except in August, and are responsible for governing and guiding the college system through the establishment and administration of policies related to Academics, Finances, Facilities, Student Affairs, Personnel, Labor Relations, Communications, and Information Technology.
Administration
The Board of Trustees, the system colleges, and their students are served by a System Chancellor and an administrative staff with offices responsible for leadership and coordination of system initiatives.
