Frequently Asked Questions About the Blackboard Learn Implementation & Timeline

What is Blackboard Learn and why are we implementing it?
Blackboard Learn is the newest version of the Blackboard learning management system (LMS). Like our current LMS, Blackboard Vista, the Blackboard Learn system facilitates the creation of web-based educational environments, and provides a highly intuitive, standardized and accessible interface that  includes a set of online educational tools to facilitate learning, communication and collaboration.

What is the Blackboard Learn Implementation schedule?
We have made the decision to implement the new LMS because Blackboard Vista will be unsupported by Blackboard by the end of 201. Fall 2012 is the systemwide Go-Live for all Faculty and Students to begin using Blackboard Learn.

  • Summer 2012 courses will be taught in Blackboard Vista.

  • By May 31st:

    • Faculty who are currently using Bb Vista must STOP making any changes to their fall '11, winter '11, and spring '12 courses in Blackboard Vista. The courses will become unavailable and you will not be able to edit them. These courses will be copied to Blackboard Learn throughout the month of June and early July.

    • Faculty who have been teaching in Bb Learn as part of the pilots in Fall '11, Winter '11, and/or Spring '12 must also STOP making changes to these courses in Blackboard Learn.

    • If you will have students who are taking an Incomplete for spring '12 term (in either Bb Learn OR Bb Vista), be sure to contact your local DL director. They will ensure that you continue to have access to that course.

    • The online Section Migration Request form will no longer be available in Banner Self-service after 5/31.

  • June 27th:  For those faculty who have had courses MIGRATED from Bb Vista to Bb Learn after attending training, June 27th is the last day you can work on any courses youhad migrated from Bb Vista to Bb Learn, or that were created as a development course shell.

  • Beginning on July 18th you will have access to Blackboard Learn for Fall 2012, and all of your Fall 2012 courses, as well as those copied from either Vista or Learn from previous terms, will be available.

  • In September, all Summer '12 courses that were taught in Bb Vista (as well as those taught in Bb Learn by pilot faculty) will be migrated over to new Blackboard Learn production server.

How can I find out more about faculty training in Blackboard Learn?

  • You can find and register for training sessions via our Course Cart online registration system.

    • If you have not as yet attended training and follow-up workshops, now is the time to do so!!

    • If you have attended training but not worked on your practice or migrated course, now is the time to do so!!

    • If you have additional questions about this, please be sure to contact your college's local Distance Learning director.

Will there be training for students?

  • All students will be enrolled into a student orientation course.

  • There will also be overviews/orientations at each of the colleges for students.

Support

  • System Office functional and technical staff will continue to support all the colleges.

  • Check your local College Contacts to find the designed Blackboard support person(s) at your own institution.

  • After hours support will be handled by the system's 24/7 Online Support Center.

What is Blackboard Mobile Learn?
In addition to moving to Blackboard Learn, we will also be adding the Mobile Learn component of Blackboard to our menu of online tools.

  • Blackboard Mobile Learn takes interactive teaching and learning mobile, giving students and teachers access to their course content on a variety of mobile devices, including AndroidTM and BlackberryTM phones and iOSTM powered devices, including iPads.

  • Students and instructors can access documents in multiple formats, post announcements (instructors), create threaded discussion posts, upload media as attachments to discussion boards and blogs, create content items within the course map, and comment on blogs and journals, all on the mobile devices they love. You can view a video demos showing how Mobile Learn works on variety of mobile devices.  Also available are PDFs with a general overview and features summary, as well as a comparison of features by device.

  • Rollout for Mobile Learn is tentatively scheduled with the Spring 2012 rollout. It will be fully live in Fall 2012.

Who should I contact if I have questions about the Blackboard Learn implementation, or about how to obtain training that aren't answered on this website?
