Here's what participants are saying about the "iTeach
Essentials" course:
“Completing the iTeach Essentials program not only
helped me develop course design and instructional strategies
for online teaching, it also helped me rethink my “on
ground” classes, too. From engaging students at the onset of
each unit to assessing the outcomes, from 1000-point grading
system to reorganizing group work, from promoting discussion
to questioning strategy, and from course content to
transitions…iTeach Essentials helped me reevaluate my
approach to teaching in all settings! It is both rigorous
and worthwhile.”
Martin Hart, MCC
“I have learned (experienced) what it is like to be an
online student. This may truly be the most significant thing
I have learned in the course....For eight weeks I walked in
the skin of a student. That has provided a level of
understanding that would not have been possible without
iTeach Essentials or a similar course….”
David Swift, NVCC
“I found iTeach to be very well conceived, thought out,
organized, and facilitated. There is nothing I can think of
that wasn't covered…. The course structure and alert
instructors provided room for discussion of any questions
any of us had. iTeach has been the most enjoyable, useful,
and satisfying training I've gone through in over a decade.”
Tom White-Hassler, MCC
“At the beginning of iTeach, I was teacher centered in my
viewpoint of how on-line teaching would work. When I became
aware of student centered education as the focus of on-line
education, I needed a paradigm shift from my usual
structure, to a new structure. I wasn’t sure what that
structure would be in the first few weeks of iTeach, but as
the lessons built upon themselves, I was able to see what I
needed to do, to modify my teaching to be successful
online."
Nancy Stover, MXCC

A Course for Faculty Designed & Developed
by the Connecticut Community Colleges
About iTeach Essentials
The iTeach Essentials course is a 9-week, fully-online
learning opportunity for faculty that was
developed by the Connecticut Community College System. The course is targeted specifically at faculty who are interested in teaching fully online courses. Online
teaching is not about knowing which buttons to push in Blackboard.
Although technical proficiency supports online teaching, the ability to
communicate effectively online, facilitate community and interaction,
design effective online assignments, learning objectives, and course
structure are paramount to the success of online learning. Topics in
this course include both pedagogical as well as technical best practices of
online teaching and classroom management.
AS OF THE FALL OF 2011, THE COURSE
HAS BEEN LICENSED TO THE CONNECTICUT
DISTANCE LEARNING CONSORTIUM. For more
information about the course, plus registration and upcoming session
dates, please visit the
CTDLC iTeach webpage. There is now a fee
associated with registration. Faculty who are interested in attending
may wish to contact their college's Academic Dean or DL director for
additional information. There are three options
for registration through CTDLC:
- A college may decide to pay for an instructor's registration.
(The college, rather than the individual, will register the person
for the course ih this case.)
- An instructor can use their professional development funds
toward their registration. (The individual registers directly with
CTDLC.)
- An instructor can pay out of pocket for their registration. (The
individual registers directly with CTDLC.)
