Module 3.3

INTEGRATING FACULTY SELF-APPRAISALS

The self-Appraisal provides an important opportunity for the faculty member to evaluate professional goals and teaching effectiveness. Information about the self-appraisal process and guidelines may be found on page 6 of the plan and Appendix E. Appendix E details the questions that must be answered by the faculty member and provides an example of a satisfactory self-appraisal.

The value of the self-appraisal is that it represents direct input from the faculty member concerning his/her growth and performance since the last evaluation. The self-appraisal provides a third source of evidence for determining the overall level of performance of a faculty member. Faculty members, other than those in their first year, are expected to answer four questions:

1. List your professional goals for teaching and learning, and how have you achieved them since the last evaluation.

2. List the professional, community, and college activities (consistent with the mission of the college) that you have been involved in the during the past three years.

3. List your professional goals (institutional, community, and instructional) for the next three years and state how you plan to achieve them.

4. What have you done to create a challenging and stimulating teaching/learning environment for your students?

Faculty members may need assistance on how to answer these questions fully and remain within the two page limit noted in the plan. Suggestions from the Dean, as well as helping faculty members keep accurate records of their participation in community, college, and professional organizations may be important. Keeping records of professional development activities related to teaching and learning will also be necessary to effectively answer question four. Informing faculty members about this form and helping them set up workable systems of data collection will facilitate the completion of this form when it is due.

The plan states that the evaluator should review the self-appraisal statement for the following:

1. To what extent do the written statements correspond to the standards' performance categories and the College mission statement?

2. To what end has the faculty member accomplished his/her stated goals?

3. To what extent does it appear that the faculty member creates a challenging and stimulating teaching/learning environment for students?

In considering the responses to these questions, evaluators may want to examine the actual products and level of participation that the faculty member submits. Has the faculty member assumed greater levels of participation in college, community, and professional organizations? Has the faculty member submitted evidence of his/her leadership in any area? Does the faculty member's responses to question four correspond with the data from student ratings and the classroom observation? These are the types of questions evaluators may consider when reviewing the self-appraisal report.

Supporting evidence that may be included with the self-appraisal consists of:

* official transcripts or CEU certificates

* abstracts or presentations or other works

* acknowledgment of contributions

* pre and revised course syllabi or outlines

* special curricular modules

* videos of teaching

* products from committee work

This list is meant to be suggestive of the types of material that may be submitted with the self-appraisal form, it is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Evaluators may work with faculty members to identify specific sources of evidence that may be considered at the end of the evaluation cycle.

Practice Exercise One: Thinking Through the Self-Appraisal Form

The three examples of self-appraisal forms are presented for you to think about how you might assist faculty members when they are preparing their forms. Consider each example and think about what you would suggest for changes. Write your answers for question four of the form in a style that would be consistent with each example.
