Module 3.5
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Information and guidelines concerning the writing of the Professional Development Plan can be found on page 7 of the FDRP and Appendix G . All full-time faculty members are expected to develop and update an individual professional development plan in collaboration with the evaluator. The plan should address all four of the performance standards and be based on a realistic set of objectives for the next evaluation period. The plan must be consistent with departmental, college and system goals.
The evaluator will work on an improvement plan with faculty members receiving "adequate but needs improvement" or " unsatisfactory" ratings. In these cases, the evaluator should have specific suggestions for the faculty member to consider. Further, appropriate resources and assistance should be identified by the evaluator to incorporate into the plan.
The professional development plan must address the specific area(s) where concerns were noted and must outline particular activities that will be taken to correct the rating. Specific dates for completion of those activities, as well as a date for post review must be noted in the plan. Appendix G provides an outline of what to include in the professional development plan. The professional development plan should be completed as part of the evaluation summary process. When agreement between the faculty member and the evaluator can not be reached concerning the goals and objectives of a professional development, the Academic/Learning Dean will establish the plan.
Practice Exercise One: Writing a Professional Development Plan
In the previous module you were asked to write an overall performance report for Dr. Mixed. Use this report to formulate a one year professional development plan focusing on the major areas of improvement as you noted them in Module 3.4. After you have written this report, share your ideas with your supervisor and/or Academic Learning Dean.
Final Comments: It is anticipated that the assessment process will result in professional development in a cooperative and collegial atmosphere with positive institutional outcomes. In order for this to happen, all evaluators must be comfortable applying all aspects of the Faculty Development and Review Plan. As you complete these training modules, you may still have questions about a particular component of the FDRP. If this is true, please speak with your supervisor and/or the Academic/Learning Dean to address any item that may be unclear or requires further training. Remember, the ultimate goal of the FDRP is to improve the quality of teaching and learning at the College. You have a significant role to play in this effort so it is imperative that you understand and implement all aspects of the plan. Therefore, please review any module or seek other forms of assistance if you have any questions about a particular component of the plan.
