Housatonic Community College –
Campus Expansion
The
Master Plan for Housatonic Community College was adopted by the Board of
Trustees in May 2002. The Board endorsed scheme A as recommended by the
architects, to be developed in two phases.
Phase I design funds were bonded in May 2004 with the Board approving
the design in October 2005. Construction bids were received in June
2006; construction funding has been requested and is pending Bond
allocation.
The development of this project involves renovation of the former Sears
building as well as new construction. Among the major features are
general purpose classrooms, computer classrooms, foreign language labs,
a major performing arts center renovation, relocation of instructional
and administrative offices, a new bookstore, and creation of events and
wellness spaces.
A number of academic functions will also be relocated—Behavioral and
Social Sciences, Humanities, and Business Administration. Student life
functions will be housed on the third floor. General classrooms, faculty
and administrative offices are located throughout the building, and the
facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art information technology.
The expansion project will provide educational and support resources for
a student population expected to exceed 5,000 credit students and a
similar number of non-credit students.
Phase II will renovate 127,820 GSF within the existing facility and
build 13,560 GSF consisting of an addition to the library, a bridge
connector between the Sound building and existing building, and space
for a new Museum. Also included is the restoration of the parking garage
façade. $3.5ml for design funds will be requested in FY 2009, with
construction funding in FY 2010. Master Plan implementation will provide
a cohesive campus expanded to support Housatonic Community College’s
projected enrollment, with a strengthened image and identity. Each
facility will contain classrooms, academic departments, and student life
spaces.
