Northwestern CT Community College – Joyner Building Renovations

This project is for a complete renovation of the existing Joyner building, formerly the Learning Resource Center (LRC) for the campus. The existing building has a total of 24,200 GSF divided over two floors. With the opening of the new Arts and Science Building scheduled for late 2006, Joyner is now planned to house the Technology Education programs of the college. Components of this include credit and non-credit health careers such as Veterinary Technology, Medical Assisting, EMT-Paramedic and Certified Nurse Aide training.

Renovations call for a complete replacement of the HVAC system. Currently, there are three disparate HVAC systems serving Joyner. They are old and unreliable; replacement parts for these systems are hard to come by due to their age. Also included in the renovations is the replacement of the electrical components of the building including power and lighting. Branch wiring, circuitry, panels, and distribution systems for power need replacement due to their age and the need for the building to serve the technology requirements of equipment for the classroom of the 21st century.

Information technology infrastructure upgrades, along with complete architectural renovations including floors, walls and partitions, ceilings, lighting, and other finishes, are necessary to bring the facility up to current codes and standards, to provide the flexibility and modernization required to support computerization and teaching methodologies required for the classroom of the 21st century.

The exterior of the building is also in need of repairs. Brickwork will be re-pointed and re-sealed, new glazing will be installed, and a new roof will be put on. The existing roof which was installed in 1989 is approaching the end of its useful life.
