Health Career Pathways

The Health Career Pathways Model
Career pathways are broad groupings of careers that share similar characteristics. The Connecticut Community Colleges' health career pathways present possible paths students can take to advance in high demand health care occupations. Whether you are preparing for your first job or changing careers, the pathways you choose should reflect your personal interests, aptitudes and willingness to invest in further education. Support services, including health career advising, tutoring, financial assistance, social/legal advocacy, and mentoring are available to assist you in achieving your financial goals.

How to choose a Health Career Pathway
A Career Pathway helps you envision your future and what you could potentially be doing two, five, or ten years down the road if you begin in a particular entry or mid-level job. While there is no clear career ladder for many occupations (see Top Ten Career Myths) the health career pathways model allows you to explore various health related careers and evaluate your options. An Individual Education And Health Career Pathways Plan can guide you through the process. Contact a Health Career Advisor in your region for more information and assistance in developing a customized plan.

Health Career Pathways
The health care industry encompasses a wide variety of occupations ranging from medical doctors to certified nurse aides to dental assistants. Generally, salary levels for a given career are based upon the amount of education and credentialing required. While most certificate programs will not provide credit toward a degree, they offer quick access to jobs and experience in the healthcare field. The career pathways listed below represent potential career advancement routes:

Certified Nurse Aide
Pharmacy Technician
Dental Assistant
Emergency Medical Technician
EKG Technician
Phlebotomy Technician
Medical Coding and Billing Specialist
